CompTIA Security+

Exam overview

The CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) is a CompTIA credential that validates a candidate's ability to apply the concepts, controls and practices the role demands in real environments.

  • Vendor: CompTIA
  • Exam code: SY0-701
  • Domains covered: General Security Concepts · Threats, Vulnerabilities & Mitigations · Security Architecture · Security Operations · Security Program Management & Oversight

Reading the CompTIA Security+ exam objectives end to end on the vendor's official page is the most reliable source of truth on the current question pool, weighting and prerequisites. Treat the objectives document as the spec — every domain on the practice engine maps back to it.

Strategy for passing the exam

  • Anchor on the objectives, not the prep books. Print or open the official CompTIA Security+ objectives. Mark every sub-topic with a confidence score (high / medium / low) and revisit the lows weekly.
  • Practice in the same format as the exam. Sit timed sessions of 25–50 questions in this engine so the time pressure feels familiar. The timer option on the setup page mirrors real exam pacing.
  • Read explanations, not just outcomes. Every wrong answer is a free lesson. Open the Explanation panel after each question and re-derive the correct answer from first principles before moving on.
  • Mix domain focus with full-bank sessions. Use the Domains filter on the setup page to drill the weak ones, then schedule one full-bank session a week to keep mental context-switching sharp.
  • Convert every wrong answer into a note. Keep a short journal of recurring concepts you mis-rank. The patterns you spot there are usually the patterns you'll mis-rank on exam day.
  • Pace yourself on test day. Mark and move on. A 30-second hesitation on question 5 costs you a question at the end. Trust the second pass.

How to use the SailingCyber practice engine

  • Start with the overview. The card at the top of this page summarises the credential and our recommended approach. Read it before your first session — it sets the right expectations.
  • Configure each session on the setup page. Pick the question count, difficulty mix, specific domains, whether to shuffle, and whether to limit to unanswered or previously-incorrect questions. Smaller sessions for tactical drills, larger ones for stamina.
  • Use the timer to simulate exam pressure. Pick a duration that matches your target pace (typically 1.5–2 minutes per question). The countdown shows on every question and auto-finishes the session when it hits zero.
  • Resume in-progress sessions from the overview. When you close the tab mid-session, the platform remembers where you left off. Re-open the certification and pick Continue Where You Left Off, or start a fresh session if you want to reset.
  • Use Ask AI to Explain when an answer doesn't click. Each question's Explanation panel includes an Ask AI button. The AI is given the question, your answer and the official explanation and walks through the reasoning in plain English.
  • Bookmark questions for review. Tap the bookmark icon on any question to save it. Use the bookmark list to drill the ones that tripped you up before exam day.
  • Track your progress. The overview page shows your accuracy, attempted count, completion percentage, per-domain breakdown, and streak. Use these to decide what to study next.
  • Join the study group. If a study group is linked to this certification, the right-hand card on the overview page surfaces it. Ask questions, share notes, and stay accountable with other CompTIA Security+ candidates.
